I found my own way to improve my skills and distilled it down to 3 key elements that have helped me get better over the past 3 years. If you’re a video game sound designer like I am, you no doubt have unused sound effects sitting on your computer that will probably never see the light of day. This is not because the sounds are bad or unusable. It could just be that your client didn’t need them or didn’t choose them as part of the game you were working on. Or, they are sounds you were creating when practicing sound design. Whatever the case may be, these sounds are idling on your computer. Why not bring these sounds new life by selling them online to people who could actually use and benefit from them?
I’m sitting here traveling with my family and I was thinking to myself, “If I were to start all over again, where would I go to find work as a beginner sound designer?” I’ve been fortunate to be a sound designer for the last 3 years. I’ve worked as a freelancer on indie game projects and created my own sound design products. I have yet to work for a studio, because, to be honest, that just isn’t one of my goals. Having been in the industry for a while, however, I came up with a few suggestions and places I would go to find work as a sound designer in the video game industry if I were to start over as a beginner.

Let’s look into what those 3 pieces of gear were and some recommendations to get you started.
