How To Make An 8-Bit Gun Sound Effect With NI's Massive

As I was creating my 8-bit retro sound pack I knew that gun sound effects were going to be an important component. Weapon sounds often make up the heart of games. In this post I want to share the results of my experimentation and findings for creating 8-bit styled gun sound effects.

Using Native Instruments Massive synth, 8-bit gun sound effects can be created by applying a filter to a noise oscillator and sweeping that filter down very quickly using modulation. Another way to achieve these results is by modulating the pitch of a sine wave oscillator down very quickly.

What You'll Need

  1. A synth with a noise oscillator. We’ll be using Massive by NI in this tutorial.

If you don’t have any of these tools, check out this page HERE where you can find many free synths to get started. Look for synths that have a noise oscillator like the Fathom Mono by Seaweed Audio and the Burt 2.0 by Noisebud.

If this was valuable to you, please consider sharing it!
